Geocache Description:

The second part of the Hempshaw's farm ruins - not surprisingly, lower on the hill than Higher Hempshaw's!



The children of the last generation of farmers here are now approaching old age. John Rawlinson talks to them in his About Rivington book. The farmers would never agree that the life was lonely. One told of going from Hempshaw's to join the army in 1914 on the outbreak of war, and after seeing service in Egypt, France and Mesopotamia, he came hime in 1919 to find his parents living in Horwich and the farm empty and desolate.

Another story was of the young son of one of the farmers being told by an aged farm labourer to go quietly around these farms, because a lot of brave men are buried here.

Although the farmers raised sheep and cattle and cultivated vegetable plots, they had to do plenty of shopping, and mindful of the long periods of bad weather they had to endure, they were asked what they did if supplies ran out. "We went to the Co-op shop in Belmont for sugar and the like." Whereupon he was asked if his father let him have a horse, "Oh no," he replied, "He said it were too rough for a horse, you must take your sister."
