Geocache Description:

The cache can be found below a collapsed tree, close to the hiker path.

The Karancs can be morphologically divided to three sections from all poles. Its 729 meters high top is often cloudy which resembles to the Olympus in its form and character so it was called the "Palots Olympus".
On its surface steep ridges follow the deep valleys which are often rock-glaciered. This harmony is especially beautiful on the western slopes. The Karancs is an example laccolite (hidden) volcanic activity. It stand alone in Hungary but one of the most beautiful even in Europe. The lava was not erupted to the surface bur pressed in the marl which covered the surface in the Oligocene, and raised a part of it. With it a strange layering was formed in the crust. The older sedimentary rock covers the younger andesite.
The border runs along the ridge the northern slope belongs to Slovakia. From the lookout tower on the top a fascinating view opens to the surrounding country. To the weaving hills of the Cserhát, the long ridge of the Mátra, the tops of the Bükk and the Slovakian Erzgebirge or in clear weather even to the lacy ranges of the High Tatra.

St. Margaret Chapel:
The chapel was built in the 20th century in two phases on the 685m high Kápolnahegy (Chapel-hill), which is part of the Karancs-mountain. Going southbound from Karancs- saddle the Kápolna-hegy (Chapel-hill) is reachable after a humpy ramp. The roman chapel supposedly was built on the small plateau in the 12th century, which was devoted to the honour of St. Margaret. The stones of the original roman-fashioned walls were built in the western gable and visible in our time too.
