This Cache is located near Chappel Viaduct.
The Chappel Viaduct, which is in the north Essex Colne Valley, is a designated grade one European monument.
With a tally of seven million bricks it is second only to Battersea Power Station in being the largest brick built structure in England.site
In 1847 work on the Chappel Viaduct commenced, originally it was decided that the structure was to be timber arches on brick piers, however workmen found suitable brick earth on site and it was decided that brick arches would be constructed. In total the viaduct is 1066 feet long, has 32 arches, around 7 million bricks and cost a total £32,000 and 2 years to build.
PLEASE BECAREFUL WITH CHILDREN AS THERE IS A RIVER RUNNING THROUGH THE SITE.
We visited this site while searching for another in the area, ''Cow Juice Pot at Chappel Viaduct''.
We have a cache set near a Viaduct at Harringworth called ''Railway Children Too'', and another one at Haverhill called ''Colne Valley Railway Children'', so thought that a simlar theme would be nice at such a spectaculor structure.
Actually this is our third of four ''Railway Children'' caches.
At the time of setting the cache the area around the clues etc was overgrown with nettles but accessible.
Parking is available at N51 55.276 E000 45.238.
The co-ords at the top of the page, will take you to a Viaduct support pillar with a certain number.= 2A.
