PEI's Third Earthcache and the 1600th earthcache
globally!
This earthcache will bring you to one of the more commonly
promoted aspects of Prince Edward Island - a red dirt road. While
there are many throughout the province, it is not by accident that
this earthcache is set in the urban setting of Charlottetown.
The red soil found throughout PEI is one of its trademark sights.
While the red soil isn't entirely unique to PEI, it is certainly
most frequently associated with the island.
"Charlottetown soil" is actually considered PEI's provincial soil
and is characterized by a fine sandy loam texture, is mainly well
drained and is highly suitable for the production of a wide range
of crops, including another symbol of the island - potatoes.
It is the most predominant soil on the island, accounting for
approximately 470,000 acres of land
To claim this earthcache please do the following; Please note
that all requirements should be met and confirmation received from
the cache owner prior to posting a "found" log.
1) Research and email the answer to the following questions. What
makes the soil on PEI so red? Also, submit a theory as to why this
phenomenon is so common in PEI, and less so in the rest of Atlantic
Canada.
2) At the posted coordinates, write your caching handle in the
famous red dirt of PEI and take a picture of it to post with your
log once approved. Having another red item in the picture for
contrast is encouraged, but not required. Also, in the same email
as part 1, describe the texture of the dirt (felt from writing in
it). How does it compare to regular soil?
3) Take a picture of your gps showing the posted co-ordinates (or
reasonably close). If your camera isn't clear enough, take a
picture of you holding the gps with either the red dirt mound or
nearby soccer field clearly visible.
Logs without pictures after 7 days will be deleted.
