Geocache Description:

THIS CACHE IS NOW AT N51°29.493 w000°48.399 This is the Berkshire leg of Little Quest. For more information about this country-wide network of caches, please click on the "Little Quest" banner above. Inside the cover of the logbook are the co-ordinates you will need to note down to allow you to complete the whole of "The Little Quest".

Waltham St Lawrence, centred around its cattle pond, is one of the most westerly parishes in the borough. There are many picturesque buildings in the small village, including the timber-framed Bell Inn. A plaque on the side of this historic public house explains how Ralph Newbery, citizen and stationer of London, bequeathed the Bell Inn for the benefit of the Parish of Waltham St Lawrence in 1608.

Parts of the adjacent parish church of St Lawrence, mentioned in the Domesday Book, date back 850 years. A splendid lychgate provides access to the churchyard and towering over this is a vast yew tree, planted in 1635. The church is one of the few that still remember the traditional name of its north doorway, that of the Devil’s Door. There is a little picture of a devil beside it to remind us that when the vicar enters the church’s south door, the devil exits through the north and into his shadowy side of the churchyard!

The cache is placed on a restricted byway not far from the village centre. You can either park at the end of the byway or walk down the road from the pub and church in the village. If you choose to park at the end of the byway, where there is parking for a couple of cars, the cache is around 200 yards down the flat but sometimes muddy path. You could make this a dash? You are looking for a medium sized ammo tin.

I hope you enjoy this cache and do have time to explore this sleepy Berkshire village.
