Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE CO-ORDINATES ABOVE

About the series:

The theme of the Mercator Projection Series is generally locating a cache by projecting from a point or points some distance away. Having an interest in maps and navigation etc. might be an advantage. The MP leader board can be found on my public profile.

This cache:

Solving the clues may take 30 minutes researching on the internet. Here are several clues to help find the cache hidden at a point where three very different routes virtually cross. It is located:

1.Between 5.5km and 5.7km from the front door of the former Maldon East Railway Station (in Station Road surprisingly!) – it’s not so hard to find, the clue is closer than you might think.

2.Directly under the LAM 085/LAM 3A flight path en route to Heathrow, between Braintree South and Lambourne VOR.

3.Between 42.6km and 42.8km from Detling VOR (shown on OS maps, described differently)

4.Less than 36.3 km from Lambourne VOR (shown on OS maps, described differently)

5.Between 730 and 740 metres from BRASO, formerly Braintree South (not very near Braintree ironically!) on a heading of 263 degrees (true north)
BRASO is exactly 37,000 metres, or about 20 nautical miles from Lambourne VOR on a heading of 83 degrees (true north)

6.Within 100 metres of a route taken by St Cedd in the 7th century on his way from Chipping Ongar to Bradwell

Alternatively adopt the Qichina and Caz method and use diagrams from ancient silk manuscripts from the Mawangdui Tombs and through a process of mystical Chinese Divination rituals find the cache location to within about 20 feet.

Hint: search Google using key words in 1 to 6.

Important note: set your GPS to true north - the bearings were taken using true north. The aeronautical charts show the flight path headings of 85 and 265 degrees; at the cache my GPS showed 86 and 266 degrees (magnetic) with my GPS set at a variance of 2 degrees West.

Hope it’s enjoyable, reasonably rewarding and not too challenging.

Please e-mail me if you want any help.

The cache was an ammo box that got muggled, unfortunately I had to downsize when I replaced it.
