Eltham Palace Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

angelahorn: Container has been stolen. Am in two minds about replacing it because the puzzle directions make it complex and it's not as straightforward as maintaining a regular cache.

Geocache Description:

The above co-ordinates are not for the cache, but for a point near the first stage. The coordinates of the cache itself have been added to the hint. There is no need to go into the Palace grounds, though I would recommend visiting if you get the chance.
Cache is a tupperware box with swaps for kids. Wheelchairs and strollers can get to within 2m of the cache, but you need to be able to duck and dive to reach it.

**Clues updated September 2018.**

You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.

There is free on-road parking nearby.

The Palace is open to visitors from Sunday-Wednesday (10-5 Apr-Oct, 11-4 Nov-Mar). On these days it may be best to use the official carpark (N51.26.664 E0.3.115) as the free parking is intended for disabled drivers when the Palace is open.

Finding the cache involves walking less than 1Km on the public footpaths (King John's Walk) from the above co-ordinates.

The cache can easily be tackled in reverse order. There is unrestricted free parking along much of the northern side of Middle Park Avenue. Try N51.26.553, E0.2.523, then look for a Green Chain Walk footpath sign

The starting point is around 1Km from either Mottingham or Eltham train stations.

The cache is located at a local high-point along the Green Chain Walk and Capital Ring. There is a good view across to London while collecting the answers. There are often horses in the nearby fields.

Eltham Palace is a fascinating combination of a luxurious Art Deco home and an important medieval royal palace.

Initially a moated manor house bought by Edward II in 1305, additions such as the impressive hammerbeam-roofed Great Hall in the 1470s created one of England's largest palaces for a succession of royals. Most famously, Henry VIII grew up here. After the Civil War the palace fell into decline for over 200 years and the Great Hall, once the scene of lavish feasts, was even used as a barn.

In 1933 the palace was bought by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld, who restored the Great Hall and built their adjoining Art Deco home. Filled with opulently gilded interiors, the latest mod cons and cutting-edge design features, Eltham Palace once again became a hub for society entertaining.

There are 19 acres of grounds to explore. The gardens are particularly stunning in spring. Its a good place to picnic.
