Geocache Description:

Binknoll Castle

This traditional cache is set close to the Iron Age Hill Fort, Bincknoll Castle, south of Swindon.

On the site was a Norman Motte and Bailey, and was thought to be built by Gilbert of Breteuil, after the conquest, to oversee a block of acquired manors. This site is also part of the Silbury Hill Ley line. It is the most northerly point of a 13 mile line running through Avebury and Silbury Hill to Marden Henge.

There has been a previous cache at this site, which was archived, due to it being ‘so remote’. In fact, the route, which can be a circular walk, is just over two miles, from the recommended parking co-ordinates below, so provides an opportunity to take a lovely walk through Basset Down and Quidhampton Woods. The terrain difficulty has been set assuming you take the suggested route, however, depending on which other way you may approach the cache, it may be more or less difficult.
Walking boots are recommended. Parking can be found at N51 30.909 W001 49.794
