Kermadec Castaway Cache (Raoul Island) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Michael: recieved at Groundspeak via email

The New Zealand Department of Conservation is the manager of Raoul Island which is part of the Kermadec Islands Nature Reserve. It has come to our attention that someone using the pseudonym “obblue” has established 2 caches on Raoul Island without lawful authority. Such an action is contrary to the law protecting Nature Reserves in New Zealand.

Access to this Island is prohibited without a permit from the Department of Conservation and these are closely managed to maintain a stringent biosecurity regime.

The island is also volcanically active and we are concerned that people may be injured while trying to locate these caches.

We ask that you remove these 2 geocaches from your website as soon as possible.

Geocache Description:

The Kermadec Islands, remote and beautiful…. long known to be a refuge for South Sea Pirates and, by some fairly optimistically reasoning, suspected of being a repository for their Pirate Treasure!

What better place?
Isolated, impossibly rugged, shark infested seas, and a volcano to boot. The Island’s history (as with all Piratey places) is suitably dark. Treachery, maroonings, shipwreck, and plague have all played their part in shaping its shores and in many parts the Spirits are restless still….

In recent times, the Dread Pirate OBBLUE was said to have been sighted in these parts. Naturally, rumours abound as to the location of the Dread Pirate’s Hoard (located somewhere deep within the Island). Truth or fiction? Most of us will never know, but with all this Pirating there had to be more than one cache…. And it is regarding just such a smaller cache that I speak of today.

Word is, that a small band of Castaways have managed to exist on the Island and that a Pirate Cache is said to lie somewhere near their habitation. The only way you are likely to get close enough to hunt this cache however, is to come among them peacefully, upon their goodwill and hospitality. Do be cautious however as for many of the castaways, “civilization” is but a blurry memory.

I have only these instructions and a cryptic riddle, which I pass on to you today (as the thought of such a journey makes me tremble with fear).

1. Follow your bearing 80-90m from the porch (at the given co-ords).
2. You’ll find a lot of history ‘hanging around’ inside.

Outwardly placid she mostly appears
But inward the fury builds up for years
Deep down she’s seething and boiling away
No thought spared for those in her way

In recent times twice she has vented some steam,
For those living here, this is their worst dream.
The first of these was some decades ago,
But what year exactly you’ll need to know?
And of the resident people around her that year,
How many lacked a manly full beard?
When the 2-digit year and clean-shaven combine,
A True bearing to follow is what you will find.

Her latest outburst, keep in mind while you walk
And over your shoulder, do cast a look
For in her shadow you presently stand
On this beautiful, isolate, living Island
