Op deze plaats is in het verleden kalk gewonnen. De Kalksteen werd al voor de komst van de Romeinen gebruikt voor het bemesten (mergelen) van akkers en weilanden. Vanaf de Romeinse tijd werd deze kalksteen gebrand en gebruikt als metsel- en pleisterkalk. Door de vroegere winning van de kalksteen is hier een mooie doorsnede van de ondergrond te zien.
In het Boven-Krijt (80 tot 65 miljoen jaar geleden) was heel Zuid-Limburg overstroomd door de “Krijtzee”. In deze tropische zee leefden veel planten en dieren die nu uitgestorven zijn. De Groeve bestaat uit ontelbare skeletten van kleine planten en dieren uit deze zee, maar In deze krijtzee leefden daarnaast ook grotere dieren.

On this place lime has been in the past won. Limestone was already used upon the arrival of the Romans for fertilising (mergelen) lands and pastures. As from the Roman time these limestone was burned and was used as building and plaster. Because of the former extraction of limestone here, a beautiful example of the underground can be seen.
About 60 to 65 milion years ago the whole southern region of Limburg was at the bottom of the "Krijtzee", a sea with many animals and plants. This "Groeve" consists of numerous skeleton fossils from plants and small animals that used to lived in that sea, but also bigger animals lived there.
