LOCALIZAÇÃO

O Moinho do Bengado fica localizado no Sítio com o mesmo nome, a cerca de 600m da EN 270 e a 4Km de São Brás de Alportel. No seu entorno, encontram-se dois dos sítios do concelho de maior riqueza patrimonial, ao nível das tradições locais, da paisagem natural e do testemunho histórico - Mesquita e Bengado. No horizonte, a Serra do Caldeirão e o Oceano Atlântico a beijar o céu.

LOCATION

Bengado's Mill is in a place with the same name, about 600m from EN 270 and 4 Km from S. Brás de Alportel. Around the mill, we can find two of the most richest patrimonial places, related to local traditions, and to natural and historical landscape Mesquita and Bengado. In the horizon, Serra do Caldeirão and the Atlantic Ocean kiss the sky!

TIPOLOGIA

Moinho de Vento, fixo, de tipo mediterrânico. Construído em pedra e com forma cilíndrica, tem uma área de 42,50 m2 e é constituído por piso térreo e sobrado. Tem uma porta, virada a nascente e duas janelas. O terreno plano e circular onde se situa está delimitado por 10 marcos.
O Moinho de Bengado constitui um exemplo de moinho de cabresto, o sistema mais antigo de tracção por meio de corda para a rotação do tejadilho, para o melhor quadrante. Antigamente, tinha nas suas velas búzios de barro que se escutavam ao longe, no silêncio da noite…

TYPOLOGY

Wind Mil, fixed, Mediterranean type. Built of stone and with a cylindrical form, it has an area of 42,50 m2, ground floor and upper story. It has a door, turned east and two windows. The ground is plain and circular and it is delimited by 10 landmarks. Bengado's Mill is an example of the halter mill, the oldest system of traction by means of a rope for the rotation of the roof, to the best quadrant. A long time ago, it had whelks made of clay in its nails that could be heard very far away, in the silence of the night...

O moinho do Bengado foi totalmente requalificado e foi recuperada a estrutura de moagem, que volta assim a girar, para mostrar às gerações do presente como no passado dos cereais se fazia a farinha que dava ao povo o pão de cada dia.
No cimo dos montes, os moinhos assistiram ao evoluir da história e hoje representam um valioso legado do património, que importa salvaguardar e dar a conhecer.

The Bengado’s mill was total reconstructed and recouped the milling structure, that thus it comes back to turn, to show to the present generations, how in the past of cereals it was made the flour, that gave to the people the bread of each day. In the top of mountains, the mills had attended the evolution of history and today they represent a valuable legacy of the patrimony, which matters to safeguard and to give to know.

HISTÓRIA

O Moinho de Bengado não apresenta qualquer inscrição sobre a data da sua construção, que permita melhor contextualizar a sua história. Vários testemunhos referem que terá laborado até cerca de 1955.
Ainda hoje são recordados os moleiros que por lá passaram, vindos de outros moinhos: o Ti Manuel Cansado, o Boiça, o Aguardente e tantas histórias… O moleiro era uma personagem muito importante na vida social da comunidade rural. Amigo do seu freguês, astuto na defesa do seu negócio e sabedor na arte de picar a mó, para fazer a melhor farinha.
A sua localização junto de outro moinho é referida como algo típico do concelho.
Na zona serrana, ao conjunto de moinhos, chamava-se Moinho Branco e Moinho Preto: o Moinho Branco tinha por função moer o trigo, enquanto que ao Moinho Preto cabia moer a cevada e a aveia, cereais tidos como menos importantes. Nas suas proximidades, existia o depósito de trocas de cereal por farinha, que abastecia uma das fábricas de moagem da vila.

HISTORY

Bengado's Mill doesn't have any information about the date of its construction in order to a better study of its history. Several testimonies refer that it worked until 1955.
Nowadays the millers, who worked there, are still remembered: Ti Manuel Cansado, Boiça, Aguardente and so many stories… The miller was a very important person in the social life of the rural community. He was a friend of his customers, smart in business and knowing the art of working the millstone to make the best flour.
Its location, next to other mills is typical of S. Brás de Alportel.
In the mountains this group of mills was called White Mill and Black Mill: the White Mill ground the wheat while the Black Mill ground the oats and the barley, less important cereals at that time. Not very far from them, there was a deposit where they exchanged cereals for flour and this supplied one of the grinding factories of the village.
