Geocache Description:

Small cache in one of Kerry's nicest towns.

Kenmare is a heritage town in South Kerry with a population of approximately 2,000. The Irish name for the town, "An Neidín", translates into English as "Little Nest". Looking at the surrounding mountains makes you see why it was given this lovely name in the first place.

The town is located at the junction of the Iveragh Peninsula and the Beara Peninsula where the Roughty River flows into the sea. It is on the famous Ring of Kerry and is noted for receiving Ireland's tidiest town award in 2000. It is also the gateway to the rugged Ring of Beara and is the ideal location from which to discover the southwest of Ireland.

The three main streets that form a triangle in the centre of the town are called Main Street, Henry Street and Shelbourne Street. At the height of summer, these streets become very busy and, due to the one-way system, it can take an age to get from one end of the town to the other, so be patient!

Despite fears that the town is becoming over-developed (it seems the councillors have no regard whatsoever for the Local Area Plan) and losing its identity, the town still retains its quaint charm and is one of the best places in Kerry for a pint! On 15th August every year, a large fair is held in the town. The day attracts large crowds of locals and visitors and is the busiest day of the year in Kenmare.

The cache is a VERY small plastic lunchbox with room for only a few items. I had to break the pencils and cut the notebook to fit them inside! It is wrapped in a black cloth to hide it from muggles. Don't be afraid to throw a few leaves or twigs over it when finished.

To reach it, I would suggest using the car park at the top of the town (N51º52.891' W9º34.952') and walking the rest of the way. Parking on the street is tough to find and, in the summer, walking is quicker than driving anyway!

Walk south of the town along Henry Street towards the river and turn left where you see the sign for "Reenagross Park". The cache is not far down this path. There are a few trees around but hopefully they will not interfere too much with coverage.

After finding it, continue on through the gateway (it looks like an entrance to private property but it's not) and check out the rest of the park. It is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the town. Before entering the gateway, look out for the two friendly llamas (I think - see photo!) in the field on the left. An apple or two would be much appreciated by them I'm sure!

To avoid backtracking, you can exit the park through the golf course - just watch out for any stray balls! Take time out to check out the town (it won't take long!) and perhaps check out one of the biggest stone circles in Ireland (N51º52.705' W9º35.293'). It is on private property though and an entrance fee of €2 per person is required.
