Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE CO-ORDINATES ABOVE

About the series:

The theme of the Mercator Projection Series is generally locating a cache by projecting from a point or points some distance away. Having an interest in maps and navigation etc. might be an advantage. The MP leader board can be found on my public profile.

This cache:

Clue: The cache is 36,285 metres due East (on the same WGS84 latitude) of the intersection of the central reservations of the London Orbital Motorway and the M11. It is not recommended to visit the latter location to establish the co-ordinates!

It is 14,570 metres due north (on the same WGS84 longitude) from a point in the cemetery at Leigh-on-Sea at N51 32.900 E0 ??.011. Again it is not necessary to visit the cemetery. Measurements should be accurate to within about 5 metres.

The cache is a small plastic box in a camo bag, located practically on a public footpath.

You can park in the vicinity of the given co-ordinates (N51 41.200 E 0 39.800) and use public paths including a short 150m stretch of road to walk to the cache. The round trip is about 2.5 to 3.0km. I don’t think it is possible to park safely much closer. An Ordnance Survey Map would be useful. Set off south towards Purleigh Hall and the footpath.

Points of interest in the village of Purleigh include:

1).All Saints Church that was built in the 14th century but had a major restoration in 1892.This restoration was paid by Americans in memory of Laurence Washington who was Rector from 1632 to 1643 until removed from office by the Puritans for tippling too much of the local brew. The reason for the Americans'generosity? Rector Washington was Great Great Grandfather of the first president of USA.
One of the two redwood trees in the churchyard was struck by lightning in August 2003 and although there was talk in council meetings of removal, it still stands today.
Occasionally the church tower is open to the public and offers good views over Essex;

2).the views from higher ground (well, high for Essex!) – from the cache you can see to Danbury, Maldon, the River Blackwater and Bradwell Power Station.

I hope you enjoy Purleigh.
