This cache is placed close to one of the great Manchester landmarks, the Manchester Ship Canal and offers a view of that modern temple to retail therapy, the Trafford Centre. It is also a few moments walk from one of the engineering marvels of the British Waterways.
The Barton Swing Aqueduct was designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and opened in 1893. It carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal as it passes through Barton-upon-Irwell.
In its closed position, the aqueduct allows canal traffic to pass along the Bridgewater Canal. However, when large vessels need to pass along the Ship Canal, the massive iron trough (234ft long and weighing 800 tonnes) can be swung through ninety degrees via a pivot mounted on a small, purpose-built island in the Ship Canal. Gates at either end of the trough retain around 800 tonnes of water within the trough; further gates on either bank retain water in their adjacent stretches of canal.
This aqueduct is one of the original "Seven Wonders of the Waterways" as compiled by Robert Aickman (co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association) and published in his book Know Your Waterways.
This is the third cache hidden here by Team Tazmina following Muttoneer's original hide and the following cache placed by AndroidAndy. The cache is a small container concealed at the base of the tree.
