Geocache Description:

Another Railroad History Micro

Round and Brown.... It's not a bison tube anymore :)

Please do NOT attempt during the week between 7 am and 6 Pm. the building is occupied and the muggles look out the windows...

PLEASE REPLACE EXACTLY AS FOUND!!!

The Building is The Baldwin Tower, formerly the offices of The Baldwin Locomotive Works. As you continue around the building you will come to the parking lot where the Cafeteria once stood. It took up most of the parking lot.

Behind the cache location, beyond the fence and up the hill is the Northeast Corridor of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was by this railroad, that all the towns along it's route came to be. In the late 1800's railroad employees were sent to buy land from farmers to start towns along the rail line.

Most of the streets in nearby Ridley park and Prospect park are named for these former land barons.

The president of Baldwin's (Samuel Vauclain) Used the PRR to ship the manufacturing machinery from Spruce Street in Phila to this location. Where another geocache is a bit over 1000 ft away and at the area where the engines would leave the factory and head to the B&O Railroad to the right of St. Rose of Lima Church across the street. (By way of Old Bullens Lane)

If you go back to the waypoint and turn right and follow Chester Pike you will pass under the PRR Railroad bridge at Crum Lynn. After you pass under the bridge, you will pass a restaurant Baldwin's original Boiler shop was 100 Ft behind it. This gives you an idea of the size of the plant in it's heyday.

The PRR, once touted as The Standard Railroad Of The World, stopped here daily mostly to drop off plant workers. Some of them also lived in Eddystone and Crum Lynne.

In addition to Railroad Engines, Baldwin manufactured, Rifles, Watches shells for ships ordinance and turbines for hydro electric plants.

CONGRATS TO: REVROVER & LADY JOAN FTF!!!!!!
