Kunstmuseet er beliggende på Kastrupgård, et landsted fra midten af 1700-tallet bygget af kongelig hofstenmester Jacob Fortling.
På initiativ af Amager Kunstforening, besluttede Tårnby kommune i 1968 at oprette en kunstsamling bestående hovedsagligt af grafik. Man ønskede at supplere samlingen for senere at etablere den som kunstmuseum på Kastrupgård. Kunstsamlingen åbnede som museum i 1977. Stedet er siden udvidet med ny udstillingssal.
Museets hyggelige café har rimelige priser og er fint integreret i udstillingsmiljøet både i indretning og med kunstværker.
Museet lægger vægt på særudstillinger af billedkunst fra det 20. århundrede, både dansk og udenlandsk.
Udover de skiftende særudstillinger har museet permanente udstillinger af Theodor Philipsens malerier og keramik samt lokalhistoriske samlinger: 'Midt på Amager' og 'Kastrup Glas'.

The 'Kastrupgaard-colletion' is the art museum and exhibition place of the Taarnby Commune.
The place itself is a land estate from the middle of the 1700 years, build by the kings stonemaster Jacob Fortling.
The initiative to establish an art museum was taken by a local art-circle, collecting graphichs, together with the Taarnby Commune in 1968. It opened as a museum in 1977.
The place has since grown with the building of a new exhibition hall, and a cafe is installed.
The exhibition activity is focusing on art from the 20. century, both danish and from abroard.
Besides there is a permanent exhibition of the danish artist Theodor Philipsen's paintings and ceramics and some local historic collections: 'The middle of Amager' and 'Kastrup glass'.
