Trocha historie

Maxmilián I. Mexický (1832-1867), bratr rakouského císare Františka Josefa I., prijal roku 1863 mexickou císarskou korunu.

A bit of history

Maximilian I. of Mexico (1832-1867), a brother of the austrian emperor Franz Joseph I., he consented to accept the mexican crown in 1863. He was offered to become an emperor by the group of mexican politicians who were supported by the french emperor Napoleon III. French army was sent out to Mexico to fight against just elected mexican president Benito Juárez. Maximilian recruited 6000 soldiers for his brigade in 1864, 25 of them were citizens of Strunkovice. They were of the poor class and were lured on a promise of obtainning vast lands in Mexico after the war is finished and they would become prosperous and wealthy farmers. However the french army was gradually pulled back away from Mexico and Maximilian was defeated by the republicans of Juarez. In December 1866 the brigade was disembodied and the emperor was arrested and executed with two other generals on 19th June, 1867. The majority of his soldiers were coming back as the turn of 1867 and 1868. The volunteers of Strunkovice had plenty of experiences full of adventure. They were telling their stories and meeting in one of the pub in Strunkovice. Above the table there was hung a picture of the mexican habsburgh emperor Maximilian, it is said that the picture was donated by the emperor Franz Joseph I. These veterans had become very famous in the areas around and thus Strunkovice started to be called Mexico and it has been called so up to these days.
