Geocache Description:

That is 1873! This is the highest peak in the "Lower 48". Elevation 14,494 ft. Not easy, but rewarding for those who make the effort! The views are nothing short of spectacular.

There are 4 survey benchmarks on the peak to the east of the Smithsonian hut. The furthest to the west is bronze in color. What is the year it was placed on the Mountain? The coordinates are for the location of the benchmark. As you might expect from such a lofty location I had a lock on 12 satellites!

Before you seek this cache you should research this hike carefully. It is not done casually. I recommend the following web sites for information:

Whitney Portal Store

Hiking Mt Whitney Web Site

John Muir was the 5th person to make it to the summit in October of 1873. He hiked from Independence on foot! You can read about it here:

Mt Whitney REI

This is also the start (or end) of the John Muir Trail.

Once again, research, plan, be in shape and enjoy the incredible view.
