Från 1700-talets början fram till 1907 skeppades kalk ut härifrån. Stenen kördes hit med oxar och hästar från stenbrottet i Hide.
Kalken förvarades i de två stora kalkladorna vid hamnen.
Skutornas barlast av sten tippade de i vattnet utanför hamnen - av detta har platsen fått sitt namn.
På stranden har man också byggt och reparerat fartyg.

Lime was shipped from here from about 1700 to 1907. The limestones came from the quarry in Hide by oxes and horses.
In the warehouse by the harbour the lime was slaked and packed in barrels before it was loaded on sailing boats.
On the shore ships were built and repaired.
Canister = Pet-tube.
