Geocache Description:

[EN] Mineral springs forming colourful travertine incrustations north of Besenova.
[SK] Travertinove inkrustacie u mineralnych pramenov severne od Bešenovej.

[EN] Travertine cascades at Bešenová are located north of the municipality. The constant flow of mineral water over the cascades provides a wonderful shine on the surface.

Travertine is a sedimentary rock. It is a natural chemical precipitate of carbonate minerals, often recrystallized to calcite; which is deposited from the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs) or streams saturated with calcium carbonate. When carbon dioxide-rich water percolates through rocks in limestone areas, the water dissolves the limestone and becomes saturated with it. When the water resurfaces later, the sudden drop in pressure and the change in temperature cause the water to release the carbon dioxide gas, much like fizzy drinks. The calcium carbonate then recrystallizes, often over minute underwater plants.

If pure, the travertines are white containing calcite almost exclusively. However, travertines mostly come in many colours which is the result of iron components or other organic impurities. The mineral waters of Besenova contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese, a big amount of sulphates, bicarbonates, free carbon dioxide, and other minerals causing its characteristic reddish and brown colour.

To claim your "found" log on this cache, you need to:

  1. Attach a picture of yourself with your GPS (or just your GPS) with the cascade in the background
  2. Count the number of mineral springs in the proximity of 100 meters from the cache coordinates and send me the number via e-mail.
  3. Explain the chemical mechanism of calcite dissolution and recrystalization by your words. (The brave ones can send me also the formula describing the chemical reaction )

Please send me your the e-mail via profile BEFORE you log the cache. Thank you.

Minerálna voda u Bešenovej okrem vápnika obsahuje aj horcík, sodík, draslík, železo, mangán, draslík, mimoriadne množstvo síranov, bikarbonáty, volný kyslicník uhlicitý a dalšie minerály. Svojou neobycajnou rozmanitostou patria bešenovské travertiny k najzaujímavejším pramenistým útvarom v Európe.

Pre zalogovanie tejto cache je treba:

  1. Priložit k logu fotografiu vás s GPS (samotári možu len GPS s citatelnými súradnicami) na pozadi kaskad.
  2. Zrátat pocet minerálných pramenov v okolí 100 metrov od súradnic cache a poslat e-mailom.
  3. Cez e-mail vlastnými slovami vysvetlit chemický mechanizmus rozpúštania a znovuzrážania vápenca. (Nepovinne možete zaslat aj vzorec reakcie a podmienky, za ktorych dochádza k rozpúštaniu alebo zrážaniu. )

Prosím, odošlite vaš e-mal s odpovedmi PRED zalogovanim cache. Dakujem.
