The Elgar Enigma series celebrates the 150th anniversary of
Elgar's birth, the countryside that so inspired him and his first
widely recognised work, Variations on an Original Theme, more
commonly known as The Enigma Variations.
Variation XIV (Finale: Allegro Presto) E.D.U. was dedicated to
Elgar himself, Edoo being his wife's pet name for him. This finale
echos elements from the first and ninth variations (his wife and
Alfred Jaeger being the most important influences in his life) and
finishes the whole work with style.

The Elgars' Grave
|
St Wulstan's Church in Little Malvern is the final resting place
of both Elgar, buried in 1934, and his wife Caroline, buried in
1920. At the time of Caroline's death Elgar described the place:
"We can see the little grave in the distance and nothing could be
sweeter and lovelier, only birds singing and all remote peace
brought closely to us. The place she chose long years ago is too
sweet - the blossoms are white all round and the illimitable plain,
with all the hills and churches in the distance which were hers
from childhood, looks just the same - inscrutable and unchanging."
Throughout his life Elgar was a frequent visitor to the church and
would often call in whilst passing on one of his cycling trips.
