Geocache Description:

Langermanskop - a classic view of Johannesburg! But how did Johannesburg get its name?

The rockey slopes of Langermanskop provide a classic but little visited view of the Johannesburg city centre. Wedged between the three farms of Braamfontein, Doornfontein and Turfontein, there was a portion of "uitvalgrond" or surplus land typically as a result of rough and ready surveying. Called Randjeslaagte, this land was perfect for the job of becoming the "village" to support the extensive gold diggings - it was barren, stony, no one "owned" it and no-one wanted it!

How then did Randjeslaagte then become known Johannesburg?

The cache has some of the answers to this question and you can point out some of the famous Joburg landmarks from here. Sunsets are classic. Contemplate "what do you like most about Johannesburg?"

Parking available at S26 11.712 E28 04.947 or if you prefer a steeper walk up the mountain at S26 11.697 E28 05.233.
