container desta cache fora das muralhas da vila, num local menos
movimentado onde esperamos que fique mais tempo que o anterior
:)
Monsaraz
Em Monsaraz respira-se a genuína alma alentejana. Debruçada
sobre a vasta planície, a vila parece planar, perdida no tempo,
enclausurada nas muralhas do castelo que a rodeiam na totalidade.
Um dos locais com mais carisma do nosso país. Hoje, a albufeira de
Alqueva que quase o rodeia, atribuiu a este lugar novas
características e talvez até, um novo carácter. Se será hoje mais
belo do que quando apenas uma vastidão de terra imensa o rodeava
não é fácil dizer mas a sua magia, a vontade de respirar bem fundo
quando nos encontramos aqui certamente continua a mesma!
A vila de Monsaraz é uma das mais antigas povoações portuguesas,
a Sul do Tejo. A sua ocupação data dos tempos pré-históricos,
contando-se nos arredores cerca de centena e meia de monumentos
megalíticos. O próprio monte onde foi construída a vila foi
provavelmente um povoado pré-histórico fortificado, e no Arrabalde
existe uma vasta necrópole rupestre pré-romana, de sepulturas
antropomórficas cavadas na rocha viva.
A sua posição de vila medieval acastelada, o impetuoso progresso
das aldeias dos Reguengos, situadas numa planície de fácil acesso e
enriquecida pelo esforço dos moradores, no que respeita ao
artesanato Janeiro e da grande lavra das vinha, juntamente com a
tradicional fidelidade do ideário montessarense aos princípios
políticos do absolutismo, faz com que a transferência da sede do
concelho se faça de Monsaraz para Reguengos de Monsaraz, em
1840.

After the

outside the village walls, in a less busy place :) We hope it stays
in it's home longer than the previous one
Monsaraz
Perched on the top of a hill, this little known small town is a
“jewel in the crown” of the Alentejo, if not Portugal itself. It is
a small walled group of dwellings that carefully preserve most of
their original charm by retaining the old exteriors and the
original quaint slated streets. The inhabitants of the town take
particular pride in maintaining its somewhat medieval atmosphere
with its few narrow streets that are in parts are quite steep as
they fall away to the defending walls. The views from its 13th
Century castle walls are panoramic over both the plains of the
Alentejo, the waters of the new Dam and views towards the Spanish
boarder. The courtyard of the Keep of the Castle has now been
adapted and is used as an occasional Bullring whilst the viewing
spectators line the castle walls. In the Igreja de Santa Maria da
Lagoa is the 13th Century tomb of Gomes Martins Anes, the first
Lord of the town.
During the autumn many neighbouring villages in this region use or
create a temporary makeshift Bullring as an opportunity for the
"local young bloods” to chance their courage. Without any special
protection or weapon, they pitch their skill against the charge of
the younger bulls that are progressively increased in weight and
age during the event.
