Geocache Description:

This micro is a teaser to try to get you to go further up Mount Marathon to other caches in locations with even better views. But I realize some of you aren’t able to go that far, so this cache marks the point at which you can get a decent view with the least possible effort – keeping in mind that you will still have to make a steep climb to about 900 feet elevation.

This cache is a partially camouflaged orange plastic waterproof match container. Cache contains log and pencil, and only teeny-tiny trade items will fit. Park at First and Monroe (N 60 06.502 W 149 26.750) at the trailhead for the Jeep Trail, otherwise known as the “easy” way up Mt. Marathon. The first portion of the trail is a very steep but very wide jeep road where you will pass the aptly named “Jeep Trail” cache. When you get above the tree line, the trail will level out significantly starting at a sign for the Bench Trail where there is a small reservoir. The trail is heavily used by locals and tourists alike, but watch for moose and bear, especially if you have a dog along. The vegetation in this area goes crazy in the summer, so the cache isn’t very far from the trail and should be in a fairly obvious location. I hope you continue higher up to better views and more caches!
