Geocache Description:

Definately one of Europe's most exotic destinations

The islands of Chrissi and Mikronisi are located 13km south of Ierapetra. Although human presence in the islands dates back to minoan times, the natural environment of Chrissi has barely been disturbed. The shallow blue-green sea, the sandy beaches, which in some places are full of small sea shells, and the rare cedar forest on the sandhills are the most impresive features of the islands. The island of Chrissi is almost flat, it is only 5km long with colorful volcanic rocks, covered in sand and aquatic fossils. Many species of endemic plants and animals of Crete live in Chrissi and some of them are so rare, that they they are protected by international treaties. The value of Chrissi's natural environment is great and therefore has been placed in the network of European Union's protected areas and is strictly protected by national and European legislation. Collection of rocks, fossils, shells and species of flora and fauna is not allowed.

To get to Chrissi (also known as Gaidouronisi) you need to get onto the single boat that visits the island every day during the summer season. It departs Ierapetra at 10:30 in the morning and leaves Chrissi at 16:15 in the afternoon. If you miss the boat back to Ierapetra you have two options: First, if you are lucky and there is someone on the island with a boat you could ask them to give you a ride back, and second: stay the night and wait until the next day (not recommended). So, try not to miss the boat back! The boats that make the trips to Chrissi run from early May until late October every day, but of course if you have your own boat you could visit anytime of the year. This is why we've given this cache 3 stars for difficulty.

From the cache location you will have a panoramic view of the whole Chrissi island. The cache contains a logbook, a Geocaching decleration in Greek & English and some goodies to trade. A pen is also included but bring your own just in case.

PLEASE NOTE: When logging your entry your logs should be in ENGLISH so that everyone understands what you write. The cache description is written in English and therefore we believe that the logs should follow the same language. If you don't speak English a simple "TFTC" is enough! Failure to do so will result in your log being deleted.
