The Apies River is a river that flows through the city of Pretoria, South Africa.
The river begins just south of the quartzite ridges south of Pretoria and
flows north to join the Pienaars River.
The river is also known as the Apiesrivier in Arikaans (in which "Apies" means "small monkeys"). In the early days round about 1844, the river was “home” to the Blue Monkeys. That’s where the river got it’s name from.
The first known settlement at this location was by the Ndebele tribe, in the early 1600s. They were refugees and originally known as the Matebele, which means Refugees. Around 1825 a second group of refugees settled here. They were Zulus under the leadership of Mzilikazi, who built a village on the banks of the stream (now called Apies River) running through the area.
The Apies River, notorious for flooding its banks, is one of the major watercourses in Pretoria, Gauteng. The river was channelised in 1930 and today the entire stretch of river through the CBD is concrete-lined.
SAPS Note inside the previous cache container:
2008/06/29
I found this by accident: I am a SAPS-member and saw this white male under suspicious looking circumstances, there was also a black male in the vicinity: I thought it was drug related: I went to the exact spot and found your parcel: I took it and leave the area, as my life could have been in danger, and I’m alone. At home I read the note and understand everything. Good luck to your treasure hunt and keep things up! If you see a guy on a black scrambler with a black helmet, just greet me.
Note: For your convenience we have informed the house owners close to the cache side of the cache and they are fully aware of the cache.
