The Semin dune is the last remainder of The Great sand dune. This dune is the remainder of The Late Pleistocene terrace of the river Elbe. It is formed by Aeolian (blowing) sand.

The Pleistocene epoch on the geologic timescale is the period 1.808.000 to 11.550 years before present. The Pleistocene epoch had been intended to cover the world's recent period of repeated glaciations.
Pleistocene climate was characterized by repeated glacial cycles where continental glaciers pushed to the 40th parallel in some places. It is estimated that, at maximum glacial extent, 30% of the Earth's surface was covered by ice. In addition, a zone of permafrost stretched southward from the edge of the glacial sheet, a few hundred kilometers in North America, and several hundred in Eurasia. The mean annual temperature at the edge of the ice was -6°C; at the edge of the permafrost, 0°C.

In the Glacial cycles of the Late Pleistocene were warmer and colder times. In the colder times (Glacials) rivers have less water because there was less water in oceans (Water was frozen in the glaciers). But less water ensured higher potential energy of the rivers. This energy provides erosion of valleys into the depth through the upper section (hard ground). After Glacials came warmer Interglacials, which raised the sea level and in the rivers there was more water. This water mass extend thin river-basins and made the Pleistocene terraces. This erosions breach the hard ground sections and the blowing sand sections were uncovered.

The terrace called The Great sand dune was destroyed in the middle age by the fishpond cultivation. The remainders of this dune were destroyed by the river Elbe basin regulation. The Semin dune is the last remainder of The Great sand dune in Eastern Bohemia.

It is an important site of sandphille plants in Eastern Bohemia. The rarest plant found here is Astragalus arenarius. Next to it, there is Agrostis coarctata, Veronica prostrata and another 80 types of plants. There are lot of animals too. For example Myrmeleon formicarius live here.

Your goal is to measure the width of this dune and measure its elevation above sea level. And send me this data by email with your photo near to dune.
