Geocache Description:

In 1214, the Anglo-Norman Chief Governor of Ireland erected a royal castle at Clonmacnoise. This was part of an effort by the Anglo-Normans to control native Gaelic attacks on Anglo-Norman settlements in the area. The castle and the monastery were all but levelled to the ground by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.
