Un peu d’histoire :
L’abbaye de Fontevraud a été fondée en 1101 par Robert
d’Arbrissel, un réformateur religieux itinérant.
Avec le soutien du Pape Urbain II et de l’évêque de Poitiers,
Robert d’Arbrissel fonda l’Abbaye pour organiser la vie
communautaire de son groupe. L’abbaye accueillait séparément
une majorité de femmes et des hommes. Le soutien du Pape et la
générosité des riches familles angevines ont rapidement assurés la
prospérité de la communauté.
Robert d’Arbrissel a fondé l’ordre de Fontevraud qui
assurait séparément la vie en communauté des hommes et des femmes,
et non dans la mixité. Il place la direction de l’abbaye
entre les mains de l’abbesse après sa mort. L’ordre de
Fontevraud a compté jusqu’à 123 fondations avant de
disparaître en même temps que les autres en 1789 à la révolution
française. De nombreuses Abbesses parmi lesquelles des princesses
se sont succédées à la tête de l’abbaye.
L’abbaye abrite encore aujourd’hui les gisants de Henri
II Plantagenêt, Richard Cœur de Lion, Isabelle
d’Angoulême et Aliénor d’Aquitaine.
L’abbaye a été transformée en prison par un décret de
Napoléon au début du XIXème siècle. Cette prison conçue pour 700
détenus a abrité jusqu’à 1600 prisonniers en 1942. Elle fut
considérée comme la centrale pénitentiaire la plus dure de France.
Les derniers détenus ont quitté l’abbaye il y a seulement
quelques années.

Un peu d’histoire :
Robert d' Arbrissel, an itinerant religious reformer, founded the
abbey of Fontevraud in 1101.
With the support of the Pope Urbain II and the bishop of Poitiers,
Robert d' Arbrissel founded the Abbey to organize the Community
life of his group. The abbey separately accommodated a majority of
women and some men. The support of the Pope and the generosity of
the rich local families ensured the prosperity of the community
quickly.
Robert d' Arbrissel founded the order of Fontevraud which
separately allowed the community life of the men and the women but
not in a mixed way and moreover he placed the direction of the
abbey between the hands of the abbess after his death. The order of
Fontevraud counted to 123 foundations before disappearing at the
same time as the others in 1789 with the French revolution. A lot
of Abbesses, whose some princesses, followed one another at the
head of the abbey.
The abbey shelters still today the tomb of Henri II Plantagenet,
Richard Coeur de Lion, Isabelle of Angoulême, and Aliénor of
Aquitaine.
The abbey was transformed into prison by a decree of Napoleon at
