Sv. Markéta
Na tomto míste pred více než 700 léty stával benediktinský podlažický klášter, mezi jehož zdmi vznikla obrí kniha Codex Gigas. První zmínka o kláštere je z roku 1160. Klášter byl ale velice chudý, proto v roce 1229 z existencních duvodu zastavil Codex Gigas klášteru v Sedlci. Na klášter však prišla skutecná pohroma v dubnu 1421, kdy byl klášter husitskými vojsky napaden, vyplenen a vypálen. Klášter nebyl nikdy obnoven. Až pocátkem 18. století byl na míste kláštera postaven poutní kostel sv. Markéty, který byl v roce 1721 vysvecen.
Codex Gigas, jenž obsahuje duležité stredoveké spisy, je pozoruhodný zejména svými rozmery. Jeho drevené desky potažené bílou kuží mají rozmer 920 x 505 x 220 mm. Do nich je vevázáno 312 pergamenových listu. Celá kniha váží 75 kg. Na listech je rucne psaná bible, Kosmova kronika ceská, rada rozmanitých traktátu, kalendárium, seznam podlažického bratrstva, nekrolog se jmény zemrelých a dokonce i zaklínadla. Krome peclivého písma prekvapují zdobné iniciály a další malované výjevy, zejména pak pul metrové vyobrazení dábla, podle nehož se knize také ríká Dáblova bible. Zápisy koncí rokem 1229 a zajímavostí je, že písmo se nikde nemení, jako by jí psal jeden clovek, který ani vekem nemenil své písmo! Ke knize se váže i leganda: knihu musel behem jediné noci za trest sepsat jeden neposlušný mnich. Ten si na pomoc prizval certa. Dábel si pak na oplátku vymínil, aby byl v bibli zobrazen.
Codex Gigas byl v roce 1295 ze Sedlce prevezen do brevnoského kláštera, posléze se dostal do sbírek císare Rudolfa II a behem tricetileté války v roce 1648 byl uloupen Švédy. Nyní se nachází ve sbírkách královské knihovny ve Stocholmu.

Saint Margaret
There was laying benedictine Podlazice monastery in this place more than 700 years ago. In the monastery was written giant book Codex Gigas. The monastery was first mentioned in 1160. The monastery was very poor and so Codex Gigas was pledged to Sedlec monastery to solve subsistence problems. The end of monastery came in April 1961, when the Hussite troops plundered and burnt up the monastery. The monastery has never been restored. In the beginning of the 18th century pilgrimage church of saint Margareth was founded in this place. The church was blessed in 1721.
Codex Gigas consits of important medieval documents. It is remarkable by its size. Its wooden folder covered with white leather has dimensions 920 x 505 x 220 mm. There are 312 vellum sheets bounded inside the cover. The whole book has weitght of 75 kg. The codex contains handwritten Bible, the Cosmas’ Chronicle of Bohemia, set of various tractates, calendar, list of brothers in Podlazice monastery, necrologium, even some magic formulae. One is surprised by illuminated capital letters and anoter painted scenes in addition to precise handwriting. The book is sometimes called Devil’s Bible, because it containts half meter tall illustration of Devil. Records in the book end in the year 1229. The interresting thing is that handwriting does not change troughout the book, as it was written by one man, showing no signs of change by age. There is one legend bound to the book: One naughty monk has to write the book in one night as a punishment. He called the Devil to help him. The Devil asked him to be displayed in the bible in return.
Codex Gigas was moved from Sedlec to Brevnov monastery in 1295, then it appeared in collections of emperor Rudolf II and stolen by Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War. Now it is part of collections of Swedish Royal Library in Stockholm.
