Geocache Description:

This cache was placed during the ceremony that commemorated the re-dedication of the Alexandria Freedmen's Cemetery on May 12, 2007. In 2010 there will be a memorial park at this site. We were honored to be present at this moving ceremony and placed this cache in honor of all those buried here and all those who have worked on this important cause.

You will be at the site of the graves of approximately 1800 African American freedmen, soldiers and contraband men, women and children. This cemetery was used from 1865 - 1869. You can learn more by taking a brochure at the site and/or visiting www.freedmenscemetery.org.

We were struck by the large cemetery across the street and the fact that the Freedmen's Cemetery was paved over and held a gas station and office building from the 1950's until very recently, when they were razed by the city of Alexandria.

You seek a very small container. Your initials will be the only thing that will mark your visit to this hallowed ground. Bring your own pen. The original log paper was taken from the program for this event. Please e-mail owner when log is full. If the log is full and you can replace it, please feel free (for bonus points and good karma). You can toss the old log. Thanks!

Congratluations WWCD on the FTF!!!
