Krakonoš nebo též Rýbrcoul (německy Rübezahl, polsky Liczyrzepa) je bájný horský duch Krkonoš. Existuje mnoho variant tohoto jména, neboť pověrčiví horalé jeho jméno nahlas nevyslovovali. V době národního obrození byly pokusy o počeštění Rýbrcoula na Řepočeta (Rübe = řepa; zählen = počítat). Poté v češtině zdomácněl dnešní Krakonoš. Toto jméno nejspíše pochází stejně jako název hor od keltského kmene Corconti, který uvádí ve svém díle Klaudios Ptolemaios.
Nejprve byl Krakonoš stylizován jako zlý a všemocný živel, vládce větru a démon, trestající bez rozdílu všechny. Později byl vypodobňován i jako spravedlivý zastánce chudých v boji proti chamtivcům a nenasytům. Bývá zobrazován jako obr nebo také jako trpaslík. Je strážcem hor, různě škádlí pocestné, chrání chudé a pokud má špatnou náladu, posílá špatné počasí.
Jméno rovněž nese místní pivo Krakonoš, které vaří pivovar Krakonoš v Trutnově.

Krakonoš (někdy též Krkonoš) je nazývána také vyhlídka na počátku Kozího hřbetu (kóta 1 422 m n. m.). Keš hledejte právě tady. Místo se nachází v I. zóně národního parku, tak dodržujte pravidla. Nescházejte ze stezky, keš leží hned při ní!
ENGLISH: Krakonos or Rybrcoul (in German Rübezahl, Polish Liczyrzepa) is a mythical mountain creature of Krkonose. There are many variations of this name as the superstitious hill people did not pronounce his name aloud. Some attempts were made during the National Revival times to czechize the name but in the end the today's name Krakonos was established in Czech language. This name, together with the name of the mountains have their origin most likely in the Celtic tribe Corconti which is mentioned in the work of Klaudios Ptolemaios.
Krakonos was originally characterized as an evil and omnipotent element, the lord of wind and daemon punishing all without exception. He was later described also as a fair champion of the oppressed in the fight against the hoarders and gluttons. He is usually portrayed as a giant (thereof the English name of the mountains, the Giant Mountains) but also as a dwarf. He is a guardian of the mountains, protects the poor but sometimes mischievously teases the wanderers and sends bad weather when in a bad mood.
Krakonos is also a name of the local beer which is brewed in the Krakonos Brewery in Trutnov.

Finally, Krakonos (sometimes also Krkonos) is also a name of the lookout point at the beginning of the ridge Kozi hrbet (elevation point 1 422 m). Look for the cache right here! The place is situated in the 1st zone of the National Park so please, respect the rules. Do not walk off the trail, the cache lies right next to it!
