Geocache Description:

This is a cache devoted to railroad history

Whistle Stop was a term used to describe a station that was too small and insignificant to warrant a regular stop on the timetable. If the station agent needed the train to stop to pick up passengers or freight, he would signal the train as it approached with a whistle, or more likely, with a flag set out, leading to the alternative name of a flag stop. In later years, whistle stop came to used to describe a train carrying a candidate that was running for public office and that would stop at every podunk little town along the line.

This cache has been placed near the long abandoned roadbed of the Denver and Northwestern railroad. The line, a combination of an interurban line (trolley cars) and a coal
railroad, operated from 1902-1950. The last 2 miles of the line was 2' narrow gauge that extended up to Colorado 93. Some artifacts of the railroad's presence still exist in the form of a culvert at N39 50.733 W105 11.304 and the concrete footings for a water tank at N39 50.768 W105 11.587. The coal was mined near Leyden and transported to the Denver Tramway's power plant located on the Platte river in Denver where the electricity generated was used to power the trolley cars.

The following was added to the description after Mondou2 found the cache.

As most of you know, Mondou2 leaves a signature blue and white whistle as a trade item at all the caches that he visits. When we find a cache, most of us remark upon seeing the blue and white whistle as "Mondo's been here". It has always been a little reassuring that all is well in the caching world when we come across one of these whistles. Those of us that travel far afield have been happily suprised on many occasions to be able to say "Mondo's been here" when we are in the far corners of the state or even in other states.

This cache name is really a double entendre, that is, it describes the railroad term and it also describes a cache of whistles that Mondou2 has used as signature trade items in caches, that have stopped their travels here. These whistles (visit link) have been gathered and contributed to this cache by a number cachers. The partial list of those cachers include AtoZ, DaToad, Greasepot, Spammer, Team Teman, CoPackrat, taylorsgeotracker, and of course, me. They have come from Colorado, California, Nevada, and who knows where else. As part of a note of instructions in the cache itself, Mondou2 was invited to take the whistles and redeploy them for the continued enjoyment of us all. Subsequent visitors will just need to be satisfied with the photo of the pile of whistles that appears on this page.
