Suggested route for a pleasant walk is to park either at Cross Gate and follow the leat, or park at Norsworthy Bridge and take one of the paths through Raddick plantation.
The leat was constructed during the 1790s, to carry water from Dartmoor to Devonport, although now the leat ends at Burrator. Its route was carefully selected by engineers who followed the natural contours of the land. It begins north of Wistman’s Wood picking up water from the West Dart River, then towards Two Bridges topping up from the Cowsic River on the way. As it passes around Princetown it taps off some water from the Blackbrook River and crosses it via an aqueduct before running a short distance from the Dartmoor Prison. Next on the journey is a 500m underground tunnel at Nun’s Cross, which was done to save creating a 10m deep cutting. From the top of Raddick Hill the leat now cascades 40m down to the aqueduct to cross the River Meavy. After an addition of some river water it then continues on to Burrator.
This is a traditional cache and is not hidden in the nearby stone row or walling.
