Geocache Description:

A short (150m) walk from a layby on the A887 Invermoriston to Kyle Road. Well-made path with relatively gentle steps and hand-rails.

Three months after defeating the Jacobites at Culloden, CumberlaMonument close-up nd's army was still hunting for Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie"). Roderick Mackenzie, an officer in the Jacobite army and hitherto a merchant from Fisherrow, bore a close resemblance to his fleeing leader. Roderick elected to try to lure the pursuing government troops off the scent so that his Prince might have a better chance of eluding capture. He was eventually captured close to this spot - actually on the south side of what is now the A887, in July 1746 and was executed. His head was taken to Fort Augustus for identification, whilst his body was secretly buried here by local clanfolk. His heroic action gave Charles Edward Stuart valuable days in which to make good his escape. The cache takes its name from the small straem that flows near the grave - Caochan A' Cheannaich means "Stream of the Merchant". Each year in July, a small group of The Clan Mackenzie Society gather here to honour theThe grave. memory of the 'saddest and noblest of the Mackenzies'.

Please respect the fact that the grave itself lies in hallowed ground: the cache is NOT within that ground.
