A short multi-cache on South Ambersham Common. The co-ords above
are not the cache co-ords; they are the recommended parking place
to complete the cache. If all goes well it should be possible to
gather the clues, bag the cache and be back at the start point in
about 30 minutes
(apparently this estimate is overly optimistic - it takes about
that long if you know where everything is. Logs suggest that maybe
twice that is fair.). The final cache is a micro containing log
only - bring your own pencil! Ambersham Common is one of the best
remaining heathlands in West Sussex and a real contrast to other
Sussex scenery.
As well as a rich variety of heathland plants the area supports
glow worms, oil beetles, rare butterflies, click beetles, the
nationally rare digger wasps (a species which is known from only
three sites in Britain),cranefly, bog bush cricket, wood
grasshoppers. The diverse breeding bird community includes
nightjar, woodlark and Dartford warbler as well as stonechat, tree
pipit, redstart, wood warbler and nightingale. Sand lizards were
introduced to the site in 1970.
Since the Common is no longer grazed the ecosystem must now be
managed to stop the colonisation of Scots Pine and Bracken.
Students at nearby Midhurst Grammar have done voluntary
conservation work in this area.
From the carpark go first (cross country - no clearly marked path)
to N 50 58.010 W 000 41.957. At this point look below the "Danger"
sign at the five numbers below. Make the first number A and the
last B. Add one to the middle number to get C. Now onto N 50 58.BAC
W 000 41.C(A+1)(B+1). At this structure look at the base for the
numbers following the letter S. Use the first number minus 1 as D
and the second as E. Next stop is at a many trunked tree at N 50
58.EBD W 000 42.B(D+E)(D+A). Count the number of trunks. There are
TWO trees which could meet the "many trunks" description. If in
doubt do your count at about 2m height on the tree on the right
(NE). Your answer is F. Finally onto a post at N 50 58.(C-F)(F-D)B
W 000 42.EF(F+1). At this post simply count the number of sides on
the shape on the two round white plaques on either side. The number
of sides is G. The cache can be found at the following co-ords: N
