Radio Tower
This small tower with peculiar architecture is one of three towers (the other two are in plain view, but less accessible) that provided the anchors for stabilizing cables that held up a steel radio mast, 85m high and with a diameter of 3m, used by the Germans for overseas radio communications from 1911 until around the outbreak of World War I. The radio station that was served by this mast is specifically mentioned as a target in a telegram from London to the Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, Louis Botha, requesting South Africa to invade the then German South West Africa. This site was bombed from offshore by a British war ship on 14 September 1914, but none of the 17 cannon shots fired hit their target. The mast had in fact been taken out of service a month before, but was dismantled after the bombing to prevent further attacks.
