Geocache Description:

A 1 mile round trip starting from the Chequers pub at Rowhook.

Suggested parking is at N51 05.717 W000 23.914 which is the overflow car park at the pub. Pub does good beer (Harveys, Youngs, London Pride and a guest beer on the night of our visit) and has a very good menu. The landlord is happy that the car park is used but avoid busy times, e.g. Saturday lunchtime. Of course you can always justify your use by having a drink!! This cache is placed on a footpath that follows the route of Stane Street, the Roman road that ran from London to Chichester. South of Dorking the modern A29 follows the line very closely through Ockley, Billingshurst, and as far as Pulborough. At Rowhook the A29 runs east of Stane Street leaving this path tranquil. As you follow the footpath across the fields you can almost imagine the soldiers marching along the road. It looks as if the road ran between the two fields, behind the fence, as you walk towards the cache. Stay on the footpath until near the cache site. You do not need to cross any fences, although you may have to climb over the gate which blocks the footpath as the landowner has locked it. Please ensure the cache is well hidden after logging your visit.
