Fourvière

Cette cache se trouve à quelques pas de la Basilique. Il y a un parking sur place ou on peut monter en funiculaire du Vieux Lyon. Elle ne contient que le logbook : Prévoyez donc un stylo.

The cache is located a very short walk from the Basilica. There is a car park here or you can take the funicular from Old Lyon. It only contains the logbook, so you should take a pen with you.

Fourvière fait partie du territoire classé au patrimoine Mondial par l’Unesco en 1999. C'est sur la colline de Fourvière qu'ont été mis à jour les vestiges de la ville romaine. Un parc archéologique, s'étend sur une grande partie du site. A partir du XVIème siècle et surtout pendant le XVIIème siècle, l’installation de congrégations religieuses sur la colline et sur ses pentes ont fait de Fourvière « la colline qui prie ». Le quartier conserve encore aujourd’hui la marque de l’emprise de l’ordre religieux. En 1848, le Cardinal de Bonald crée une commission pour s'occuper de la reconstruction du clocher de l'ancienne chapelle. Les membres fondateurs sont surtout des notables lyonnais. Les pèlerinages se développent considérablement et la chapelle ne peut bientôt plus contenir le flot des pèlerins. Depuis longtemps on projetait de construire un nouveau sanctuaire. En 1870, les prussiens sont aux portes de la ville. A la suite de la demande de Lyonnaises, Monseigneur Ginoulhiac fait un vœu : une Basilique sera édifiée si Lyon échappe à l'occupation ennemie. Le voeu est exaucé. La première pierre est posée en 1872. La construction est très rapide : le nouvel édifice votif dédié à la Vierge est inauguré en 1896. En savoir plus cliquez ici, ici et ici.

The Fourvière district is part of the area classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. On Fourvière hill remains of the Roman city have been uncovered. An archeological park covers a large portion of the site. From the XVIth and especially the XVIIth century, numerous religious groups moved onto the slopes of Fourvière, hence it became known as "the praying hill". The district still shows signs of the hold of the religious orders. In 1848, the Cardinal of Bonald created a commission to manage the rebuilding of the old chapel bell-tower. The founder members were mostly noteworthy people from Lyon. Pilgrimages were on the increase and the chapel could no longer cope with the influx of pilgrims. For a long time they planned to build a new sanctuary. In 1870, the Prussians were at the the city gates. After a request from the inhabitants of Lyon, Monseigneur Ginoulhiac made a vow: a Basilica would be built if Lyon was freed from enemy occupation. The promise was kept. The first stone was laid in 1872. Construction was very fast: the new building dedicated to the Virgin was inaugurated in 1896. For more information click here, here and here.
