Brätte fick sina första stadsprivilegier på
1580-talet. Under en kort period på 1610-talet hade
Brätte sin storhetsperiod. Under den tiden var staden Sveriges
enda utskeppningsort i väster, danskarna hade ockuperat bl a
Nya Lödöse (numer känd som Gamlestan i
Göteborg). Redan 1619 återtog Sverige de ockuperade
städerna och Brättes storhetstid var över.
Platsen där Brätte låg var svår att
försvara. Dessutom blev Vassbottenviken för grund
för fartygstrafiken. Staden flyttades därför och
fick 1644 sina stadsprivilegier, nu under namnet
Vänersborg.

För att nå den är det däremot enklast att
gå igenom området

Brätte obtained its first charter in the 1580’s. The
town had a boom during the 1610’s, when it was Sweden’s
only shipping town to the west. All other towns were occupied by
the Danes. The boom ended already 1619 when Sweden retook the
occupied areas.
Brätte was hard to defend and the water inlet was becoming too
shallow. Therefore it was decided to move the town. In 1644 the
moved town got its first charter. By now, it had changed name to
Vänersborg.
The cache does not lie inside the area with ancient leavings
from Brätte! The easiest way to reach the cache is to walk
through the area with the leavings.
