The Thomaston Town Hall building stands upon the original site of
the town cemetery.
In 1883, to permit constuction, the remains of the dead were
unearthed and relocated. They were moved to Hillside Cemetery, in
the section which is now known as the Ancient Cemetery.
As you approach the first stage, you’ll notice a lone headstone.
This stone is simply marked 'TA'.
It is said to be the grave of a witch. Was she a witch? How did
she die? No one knows for sure, but the story is that back in the
days of witch hunts, a person accused of witchcraft could not be
buried on hollowed ground. Hence her final resting place, alone,
and just outside of the ancient cemetery.
The micro at the first stage does not need to be opened.
Once you find the final cache, you can continue past the pond and
follow the road through the main cemetery back down to your
vehicle.
The cemetery is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm
Please take care not to block the garages or maintenance crew when
parking.
Also, note that the trail is bordered by private property on the
left.
The cemetery is not maintained in the winter. The roads and the
trail may be slick if there is snow or ice present.
I've unearthed the link to a great website, check it out!
