O primeiro documento autêntico a referir o castelo data de 1173 e consiste na sua doação, pelo rei D. Afonso Henriques, à Ordem de Santiago.
Na mesma altura em que os Templários dotavam o curso médio do maior rio peninsular de uma linha defensiva sem precedentes no panorama da arquitectura militar medieval portuguesa, D. Afonso Henriques passava carta de foral a Abrantes, instrumento régio que visou, acima de tudo, "atrair colonos para uma região despovoada".
O castelo que ainda hoje coroa a cidade de Abrantes deve ter tido a sua primeira fase construtiva pela segunda metade desse século XII.
Pelo final do século, a fortaleza devia ser já relevante, uma vez que foi um dos locais de assédio das tropas almóadas, no contra-ataque islâmico que obrigou ao recuo da fronteira portuguesa no reinado de D. Sancho I.
No século XIII, o castelo foi objecto de muitas reformas, que culminaram na materialização de uma fortaleza gótica. Com obras documentadas no reinado de D. Afonso III, foi no tempo de seu filho, D. Dinis, que ocorreram as mais importantes alterações. Este monarca doou a vila a sua mulher, D. Isabel de Aragão, passando a integrar o vasto património das rainhas portuguesas. Paralelamente, actualizou a fortificação, patrocinando a construção da torre de menagem (com rara panorâmica de 360º, encontra-se a 196 m de altitude ) e de grande parte da cerca do castelo.
No século XV, no mesmo impulso que levou a grande nobreza a transformar antigos castelos em paços senhoriais, a secção ocidental das muralhas do castelo foi aproveitada para albergar o palácio dos condes de Abrantes, edificado na década de 30 por Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, alcaide-mor da vila. Este paço foi substancialmente transformado no século XVIII, por vontade do 1º marquês de Abrantes, D. Rodrigo Anes de Meneses.

At the same time when the Portuguese Medieval Templários endowed the average course of the biggest peninsular river with a defensive line without precedents in the panorama of the military architecture, D. Afonso Henriques passed charter letter of Abrantes, regal instrument that aimed, above all, “to attract colonists for a depopulated region”.
The castle that still today crown of the city of Abrantes must have had its first constructive phase in the second half of century XI.
For the end of the century, the Fortress had to be already excellent, since that was one of the places of siege of the almóadas troops, in the Islamic counter-attack that compelled to the jib of the Portuguese border in the reign of D. Sancho I.
In the century XIII, the castle was object of many reforms, that had culminated in the materialization of a gotic Fortress. With workmanships registered in the reign of D. Afonso III, it was in the time of its son, D. Dinis, that the most important alterations had occurred. This monarch donated the village to his woman, D. Isabel de Aragão, starting to integrate the vast patrimony of the Portuguese queens. In parallel, he performed some construction in the Fortress, sponsoring the construction of the tower arrest under bail (which has a rare panoramic of 360º, with 196 m of altitude) and great part of the castle.
In century XV, in the same impulse that took the great nobility to transform old castles into palaces, the occidental section of the walls of the castle were used to advantage to lodge the palace of "condes of Abrantes", built in the decade of 30 by Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, "alcaide-mor" of the village. This palace was substantially transformed in century XVIII, by will of the first marquis of Abrantes, D. Rodrigo Anes de Meneses.

Esta "caçada" está dividida em duas partes. A primeira cache leva-os a ver a vista da torre de menagem, localização com vista panorâmica de 360º a 196 metros de altitude. É uma pequena "chapa" magnética com inscrições (serão as coordenadas? :-) ).
Permite também visitar, no interior do Castelo, a Igreja convertida em Museu desde os anos 30, e todos os espaços que têm vindo a ser restaurados.

Inverno: Abertura às 10h e Encerramento às 17h30
Verão: Abertura às 10h e Encerramento às 18h
Encerra à Segunda-Feira
A segunda parte da "caçada" é nos jardins do Castelo, onde poderão disfrutar de um jardim bem cuidado, num local calmo e agradável. Tem um pequeno lago, com 3 cisnes um pouco agressivos. Se levarem os miúdos tenham cuidado. De verão pode-se passar directamente do Castelo para os jardins pela "porta da vergonha", de inverno aconselhamos que façam o percurso de manutenção cujo inicio é junto ao bar Alcaide ao pé do parque de estacionamento do Castelo.

This “hunt” is divided in two parts. First cache takes you to see the sights from the "Torre de Menagem", localization which has a panoramic sight of 360º with 196 meters of altitude. It is a small magnetic “plate” with inscriptions (will it be the coordinates? :-) ). It also allows the visit to the interior of the Castle, the Church converted into a Museum since the 30s, and all the spaces that have come to be restored.

The Castle of Abrantes has the following schedule:
Winter: Opening at 10AM and Closing at 5:30PM
Summer: Opening at 10AM and Closing at 6PM
Closed on Mondays
The second part of the “hunt” is in the gardens of the Castle, where you will be able to enjoy the well-taken care garden, in a calm and pleasant place. It has a small lake, with 3, kind off aggressive, swans. If you take the childreen, take care. In the summer you can go directly from the Castle to the gardens through the "door of shame", on winter we advise that you follow the path on the maintenance yard that begins in the Alcaide Bar near the Castle parking.
