Whitehaven Beach is located on the eastern side of Whitsunday Island which is one of 74 Islands that were created by a sea level rise that drowned a mountain range. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and as such a national park (since 1944).
This Cache is about a beach experience and sand. As those grains under your feet can tell a sedimentologist stories and you are about to learn what (and how) they tell their story.
The most remarkable thing about Whitehaven Beach is the clean, white sand which is almost pure silca (=quartz) sand. But what does the term sand actually mean? The term sand describes a grain size, the next smaller one would be silt and clay and the next coarser one would be gravel and boulders. You can easily differentiate between clay, silt and sand as clay is smooth in your mouth (just make sure that if you try it, do it with a clean piece of clay), silt feels in your hand like flour and sand feels gritty between the fingers.
The grainsize of a sediment is a result of certain factors like the chemical composition of the grain (eg cleavages and hardness), the severity of the weathering (climate), the distance and energy the particle was transported.
If you look closely (and you use a hand lens or loupe) you can see that all the particles have different morphology however the general appearance of the particles can be classified with respect to its sphericity (is the particle soccer ball shaped or is it more rugy ball shaped) and how rounded the particle is (angular or round). Furthermore the further sediment is transported the more of the heavier grains will be washed out and the cleaner the deposit becomes. It is assumed that the sand situated at Whitehaven Beach originates from the Gold Coast which is located further south and it is transported by a longshore drift system (basically underwater currents) to the north and due to the far distance it was transported everything but the silica particles became lost on the way leaving this clean sand.
I have decided that after recieving numerous logs / emails trying to claim the cache without performing the task to change the log requirements.
Logging Tasks:
It will make logging the Cache harder but for that I will give it an additional difficulty star. For logging this Earthcache you have to do two things. First you have to post a Photograph of yourself with your GPS on Whitehaven Beach and you have to post a photo showing your GPS, the printout of the comparision chart and a magnifying glas (hand lens) this photo has to have either the sign or part of the beach in the background so that it prooves that you had your magnifying glas and comparision chart on the beach! You do not have to be ad the precise coordinates of the Cache but somewhere on the beach neraby. Second you will have to classify the sand on the beach using the visual estimation chart provided on this page and send me your description of the sand using the Email Address in my Profile. Please be aware that you are in a national park and it is thus not allowed to collect sand for the inspection at home.

Disclaimer: As this Cache is located within the Whitesunday National Park I have contacted the EPA and they contacted the Whitsunday District Office of Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service and they approved placing a cache there as long as it is not a physical cache. I would assume that this is one of the few caches that actually has the approval of the EPA in that area! Whitehaven Beach befindet sich an der östlichen Seite der Whitsunday Island, eine der 74 Inseln, die durch einen Anstieg des Meeresspiegels, dass eine Bergkette ueberflutete entstand. Es ist Teil des Great Barrier Reef Marine Park und als solcher seit 1944 ein Nationalpark.
Dieser Cache gibt euch eine Stranderfahrung und ein tieferes Verständnis des Sandes. Diese Körner unter den Füßen können einem Sedimentologen Geschichten erzählen und Sie sind dabei, zu erfahren, welche Geschichte Sie erzählen können.
Das beachtenswerte an Whitehaven Beach ist der saubere, weiße Sand, der ein nahezu reiner Quarz Sand ist. Aber was bedeutet der Begriff Sand eigentlich?
Der Begriff Sand beschreibt eine Korngröße, wären die Körner kleiner wäre es Schluff und Ton und wären sie größer wäre es Kies oder Geröll. Sie können leicht zwischen Ton, Schluff und Sand unterscheiden, denn Ton ist in deinem Mund glatt (stellen Sie nur sicher, dass, wenn Sie es versuchen, Sie es mit einem sauberen Stück Ton probieren), Schluff fühlt sich in der Hand wie Mehl an und Sand fühlt sich grobkörnig zwischen den Finger an.
Die Korngröße von Sedimenten ist eine Folge von bestimmten Faktoren, wie die chemische Zusammensetzung des Gesteins (z. B. Spaltflächen und Härte), die Intensität der Verwitterung (Klima), die Distanz und die Energie mit der die Körner transportiert wurden. Wenn Sie genau hinsehen und eine Lupe benutzen können Sie sehen, dass alle Sandkörner unterschiedlich sind, jedoch die generelle Form aller Sandkörner einander ähnlich ist und im Hinblick auf seine Kugelform (Sphericity) eingestuft werden können (hat das Korn die Form eines Fußballs oder die Form eines Rugby Balls) und wie gut gerundet das Korn ist (eckig oder rund). Vergleichen Sie die Sandkörner mit der Vergleichsgraphik.
Darüber hinaus je weiter das Sediment transportiert wird desto mehr werden die schwereren Körner ausgewaschen und desto reiner wird der Rest. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass der Sand des Whitehaven Beach ursprünglich von der weiter südlich liegenden Goldküste stammt von welcher er durch ein Longshore Drift-System (vor allem unter Wasser Strömungen) nach Norden transportiert wurde. Aufgrund der Distanz die der Sand transportiert wurde, wurde alles außer dem sauberen Quarz Sand ausgewaschen.
Ich habe beschlossen, dass ich nachdem ich zahlreiche logs / E-Mails erhalten habe von Leuten die versucht haben den Cache zu loggen ohne die Aufgaben zu bearbeiten die Log Anforderungen etwas zu erhöhen.
Log Bedingungen:
Um diesen Cache loggen zu können müssen Sie drei Dinge tun. Erstens müssen Sie ein Foto von sich mit Ihrem GPS auf Whitehaven Beach machen, zweitens müssen Sie ein Photo von ihrem Ausdruck der Vergleichgraphik, ihrer Lupe und ihrem GPS machen (das Photo muss entweder das Schild mit dem Namen Whitehaven Beach, einen erkennbaren Teil des Strandes oder lesbare Koordinaten auf dem Display des GPS haben (diese müssen auf dem Strand sein)). Beide Photos müssen einwandfrei beweisen dass Sie auf dem Strand aufgenommen wurden, dass Lupe und Vergleichsgraphik auf dem Strand waren und müssen mit dem Log gepostet werden! Sie müssen nicht genau an den angegeben Koordinaten sein solange Sie auf Whitehaven Beach sind ist es OK!
Drittens müssen Sie den Sand am Strand mit Hilfe der Vergleichsgraphik, die als Datei der Cachebeschreibung angehängt ist, klassifizieren und mir Ihre Einschätzung des Sandes schicken. Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie in einem Nationalpark sind, und es ist daher nicht zulässig, Sand für die Inspektion mit nach Hause zu nehmen. Darüber hinaus kann ich nur empfehlen, eine oder mehrere Nächte auf dem Campingplatz auf dem Strand zuzubringen, da Sie so den Strand am frühen Morgen und Abend für sich alleine haben, was eine tolle Erfahrung ist. Disclaimer: Da dieser Cache sich im Whitesunday Nationalpark befindet habe ich die EPA kontaktiert und sie kontaktierten den Whitsunday District Office of Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service und sie haben der Platzierung dieses Caches zugestimmt, solange es sich nicht physikalischen Cache handelt.
