Geocache Description:

Motorway Mayhem caches are intended to provide fairly easy drive-by caches together with useful information for travellers who are in need of a break.

As you progress north up the M6, the junctions become further apart and time slows down! So have a break next to a nice canal here at J36. This is the 'Gateway' to South Lakeland. If you're going south, of course, there's no problem since it's all down hill! Many visitors pass this way hoping for a dry week in the Lakes!
(For an excellent weather forecast specifically for mountain users see: Mountain Weather Information Service)

The cache is next to the Lancaster Canal which runs from Kendal to Preston and is just a short distance from the motorway junction. At junction 36, head east on the A65, away from the Lakes, straight over a smaller roundabout, heading east towards Kirkby Lonsdale. Just after the end of the dual-carriageway is a lay-by on the right (south) of the road. Park here, next to a rather nice coffee shop!

At the end of the lay-by a sloping track (which can be slippery) leads down to the canal and the cache. Watch out for nettles in the summer!

Other points: At the lay-by is the Hideaway Coffee House which has a nice view over the canal. See the pic below for their phone no. if you want to check they will be open.
Or, at the second roundabout, take the A65 towards Crooklands. On the left, after crossing the canal, is a lay-by which sometimes has a tea van during the day. Around the corner is a Texaco garage which is open 24hrs and has normal priced fuel (much better than the services) and a small shop, and is popular with trucks.

If your dog needs a break too, you can walk along the canal towpath. The canal often has swans and ducks and can feel quite peaceful. Wellies would be good in wet weather as the towpath can get muddy.

To avoid confusion please remember to log Travel Bugs correctly and as soon as possible! Thanks.

Happy Caching - safe journey.
