Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Most family vehicles can get here. Great area to take visitors and
pictures! Coordinates will take you to a parking area. There is a
nearby traditional cache "Bruneau Canyon Overlook", that you can
visit as well.
Eight to twelve million years ago, massive volcanic flows deposited
the basalt and rhyolite layers you see now. After volcanic activity
subsided, the lava was covered by silt and gravel from the
mountains of northern Nevada. The stream-bome deposits form much of
the present ground surface. About two million years ago, the river
system began cutting down along fractures in the rock creating
today’s canyon walls that rise 100 to 1200 feet above the river
channel.
In order to log this cache you must provide a picture of
yourself/team at the site showing your GPSr and e-mail us the
answers to the following questions:
1. Approximately how many nearby extinct volcanoes are
there?
2. As the basalt flows cooled, they began to shrink and formed
vertical fractures. What is this process called?
