I've delivered packages back and forth across the Eagle River
Chain for ten years now. I always wondered what the headwaters
looked like. Now I know.
Cache is a plastic box that my son had gotten for me from a
garage sale. (He kept the army toys that were in it.) This box is
in a larger, bungee-corded wooden box.
We drove in from Hiles, the last half mile of road was
snowmobile trail - maybe extra hiking in some weather conditions.
We hiked about three quarters of a mile, one way, through a bit of
highland forest, a cedar swamp, low brush swamp, and finally sedge
hummocks - I would suppose made immeasurably easier due to the
frigid conditions. (I wonder how possible this will be in warmer
weather.)
There is a road from the west, through corporate timberlands,
that may take you to a similar hiking distance.
