Head to the nation's oldest school of the fine arts, "discover" the
room where a sphinx lives on canvas.
This cache is hidden in a painters box in the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). No admission is
required to access the cache.
The building opened in 1876. Designed by the American architects
Frank Furness and George W. Hewitt, it has been designated a
National Historic Landmark. As such, it is recognized as an
important part of America's and Philadelphia's architectural
heritage.
PAFA was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Wilson
Peale, sculptor William Rush and other artists and business
leaders. It is the oldest art museum and school in the nation.
PAFA's archives house important materials for the study of American
art history, museums and art training.
Take some time to look at the collections. The Academy's museum
is internationally known for its collections of 19th- and 20th-century American paintings, sculptures
and works on paper. Thomas Eakins' masterpiece, The Gross
Clinic, is displayed on a rotating basis.
The coordinates will take you to the location of the Sphinx
