Geocache Description:

A trip down the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal.

The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is located down the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. Inland from Park Rynie, this small Reserve (area 2,200 Ha) is mainly open grassland of rolling hills with some wooded valleys. Surrounded by sugar cane fields, the Reserve is an interesting glimpse into what the South Coast looked like before the depredations of man over 100 years ago.

The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, declared a Nature Reserve in 1973, makes for a perfect getaway, but a day trip to the South Coast is equally rewarding. There are 26 kilometers of tourist roads in the Reserve, picnic sites, walks and two dams which attract a great variety of birds with more than 300 species having been identified. Other wild life to be seen include, Eiland, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Bushbuck, Baboon, Monkeys, Porcupine and the Black-Back Jackal.

The area is also worthwhile visiting for its fascinating vegetation, and the wild flowers are a delight, seen at its best in Spring.

The gate times are 06:00 to 18:00 and there is an admission fee of R10.00 for Adults and R5.00 for Children.
