Geocache Description:

Straight forward urban Cache South of the river in the Bankside district. You do not need to get muddy to find this one.Stay on the pavement at all times.
This is wheel chair accessable.

This cache is located on the site of the old childrens hospital.
My thanks to Peter Graal from Bankside open spaces trust for alowing me to place this cache.
The Trust maintain this and a number of other parks and gardens in the Bankside area of the South Bank.
Mint St Park was formed after the Hospital was demolished.

The Cache is in the middle of the park.
The hospital provided much needed care for children in one of Londons former worst slum areas.
The hospital was founded by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1869, following the death in childbirth of his wife Evelina and their son.
At the time of opening the hospital had 30 cots and was considered to be one of the most up to date childrens hospitals of its time.
Its reputation rapidly incresed and the hospital began to admit children from all over the country and by the end of it's second year the hospital was able to treat 21,000 children!
The Evelina was designed with some of the most up to date facilities, unique to all hospitals, including the use of antiseptic techniques.
In its early years the hospital battled to combat the most fatal diseases that reflected the appalling local living conditions.
These would mainly have been infections [whooping cough, brain, nerve and lung disorder [bronchitis, pneumonia and convulsions] and tuberculosis.
In 1876-77 the total number of deaths in the Parish was 1206, of which more than half were under 5.
The hospital was closed in 1975, with the facilities moving to the brand new Guys Hospital Tower
Then in 2005, a brand new childrens Hospital was opened at St.Thomas's [ the first for 100 years]costing £60m. Serving the Boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth, it brings together the majority of Guys and St. Thomas's childrens services under one roof.

The cache is a medium plastic [bacon] container that can hold smallish Travel Bugs and Geocoins only.
Please ensure that the cache is well hidden under the WOOD.
