Jake Thackray, seen by his admirers as "the lost genius of British songwriting", died in retirement aged 63. It was an event which the cult singer, poet and comic monologuist had foreseen with his usual bawdy verve. "I want no great wet weepings," he wrote in his song, Last Will and Testament. "When I snuff it bury me quick, then let carousels begin." "Lady, if your bosom is heaving don't waste your bosom on me. Let it heave for a man who's breathing A man who can feel, a man who can see". Last Will and Testament was the title song of Jakes first successful album. Among his other most cherished songs were Sister Josephine, about a male burglar hiding in a convent, Isobel Makes Love Upon National Monuments, and La-Di-Dah, about a couple getting engaged. "He was an unassuming guy, very laid-back, not showbizzy at all. He was into all things Yorkshire, like rugby and a pint." If you already know Jakes work, then you will have no trouble finding this cache..... if you don't, then you should have fun finding out......
